It is completely normal to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. It could be a sign of hair loss if you lose more than 100 strands of hair daily and if your hair appears to be relatively thin and short. A doctor will be able to assess whether your hair loss is normal shedding.
There are many causes when it comes to hair loss, including male hereditary hair loss, diseases (e.g. thyroid conditions, anaemia, cutaneous sarcoidosis, diabetes, lupus etc.), medication (e.g. medicines for chemotherapy, osteoarthritis, blood thinning, hypertension, high dosage of vitamin A, and anabolic steroid), hormone production, scabs on the scalp, and frequent hairstyling
The 5 main types of male hair loss are male hereditary hair loss, seborrheic hair loss, alopecia prematura, receding hairline (i.e. M-shaped baldness) and diffuse hair loss.
The most common hair loss problem is androgenic alopecia, which is caused by too much dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body induced by hyperactive 5-alpha reductase (5 AR). DHT causes hair growth cycle to shorten and the weakening of hair. Eventually hair follicle will shrink and hair will stop growing.
There are 3 types of male hair loss treatment: medication (i.e. topicals and gels), hair transplant, and non-invasive laser treatment. Medication can have adverse effects on our body, such as higher risk for cancer, impotence and contact dermatitis. As for hair transplant, it can be risky since it requires surgery and patients with scalp inflammation and thin hair may not be deemed suitable for the treatment.
